A number of terrorist attacks carried out by Islamist extremists have left a trail of carnage and death in Kuwait, Somalia and Tunisia.

The final death toll has yet to be reported but police sources in this country paint a picture of dozens killed and hundreds wounded.

The Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab group in Somalia stormed a military base operated by the African Union (AU) security forces in the southern town of Leego.

An Al-Shabaab spokesperson said that 30 AU troops were killed and that the base had been seized. Their claims could not immediately be independently verified.

The AU military deployment in Somalia is protecting the Western-backed government in the capital Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab said they would intensify their attacks during the holy month of Ramadan.

Meanwhile, an unidentified number of militants attacked two resort hotel beaches in the central Tunisian town of Sousse.

The interior ministry reported that at least 28 people – including foreign tourists – had been killed and more than 36 wounded.

There were unconfirmed reports that one of the militants had been shot dead by security forces; another suspect was captured by police. The interior ministry says it believes that only two militants carried out the terrorist attack, but was on the hunt for more suspects.

In Kuwait, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for a suicide attack at the Imam Al Sadiq Mosque during Friday prayers in the eastern part of the capital.

The attack killed at least 25 Shia worshipers and wounded another 202, the Kuwaiti interior ministry said in a statement.

Eyewitnesses told local media that a suicide bomber walked into the mosque as worshipers were praying and blew himself up.

ISIL also claimed responsibility for killing 25 Shia worshipers at two mosques in Saudi Arabia last month.
