Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel at Frankfurt en route to Brazil to attend the BRICS summit which coincides with the football World Cup final this month, Indian media reports said Thursday.

Quoting Indian External Affairs Ministry sources, the report said Modi would leave for Brazil between July 11 and 13 for the 6th BRICS Summit.

The Indian Prime Minister may meet Merkel en route to Brazil. A new report by Indian daily Telegraph on Wednesday that cites the US President Barack Obama making controversial remarks about Modi, created a furore in India.

Obama is quoted as saying he “still has concerns” over Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s past, in sharp contrast to the official US administration’s posturing on a “red carpet welcome” for the Indian Prime Minister during for forthcoming September visit.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has invited all the other BRICS leaders to watch the World Cup final.

The Brazilian cities of Fortaleza and Brasilia will host the 6th BRICS Summit on the 14th, 15th, and 16th July, an event that will showcase the growing economic clout of the five countries.

The 2014 Summit’s debates will focus on the theme “BRICS – inclusive growth: sustainable solutions”.
