India’s fair trade watchdog has slapped a fine of $166000 on Google for not sharing information relating to a probe into the US-based search engine’ s alleged unfair trade practices in the South Asian country.
The Competition Commission of India not only fined Google for ” non cooperation” in the pending investigation, but also directed it to cooperate in the probe, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, which controls the watchdog, late Thursday evening.
A Google spokesperson has said that the company was ” disappointed by this development.”
“While we are confident that our products are compliant with the competition law in India, we continue to cooperate fully with the Competition Commission of India’s extensive and ongoing investigation. We have not yet received this procedural order, but will review it fully once we have,” the spokesperson said.
The case dates back to two years ago, and relates to Google favoring only those platforms it supports, which the Indian commission perceives as unfair trade practices.
