According to local media, some 1,500 relief workers were dispatched to the area to search for dozens of people who went missing after a wall of mud rushed the city and covered at least 22 residential buildings.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keying urged relief workers to do their utmost to minimized casualties.
At press time, at least three people were listed as injured, but no further details were provided.
State television reports have said 91 people are missing, 59 men and 32 women. The number of missing had earlier been put at 59.
Li called for an investigation into the causes of the landslide.
Some 900 people were successfully evacuated before the landslide hit Shenzhen, considered a major industrial zone.
