About 3.62 billion trips will be made during the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush starting Thursday, a Chinese official said Tuesday.
The figure is about 200 million more than the previous year, said Lian Weiliang, deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission at a press conference on Tuesday.
The peak of the travel season will strain the country’s transport system, Lian warned.
The China Railway Corporation said on Monday that 154.62 million train tickets to be used during the 40-day travel period around Spring Festival have been sold so far since Dec. 23.
Ahead of the busy travel season, Chinese railway police last week began a nationwide inspection on high-speed rails to ensure safety.
Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, falls on January 31 this year. Lunar New Year’s Eve is an evening of ancestor worship and family reunion dinners, one of the most important nights of the traditional Chinese calendar.
