Findus have recalled beef ready meals after tests discovered they contained horse DNA [AP]
“During the examination of a shipment of sausages brought in by road from Europe, the presence of horse DNA was discovered,” the service told the Prime news agency.
“The documentation stated the sausages were 100 per cent beef, but horse was discovered, as well as poultry and soya meat.”
The head of Russia’s consumer watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, has held talks with the European Commission’s director-general for health and consumers over the unfolding horsemeat scandal in Europe, said the service.
Gennady Onishchenko, Rospotrebnadzor’s head spoke with Paola Testori Coggi, EC director-general for health and consumers, as meat products from Europe containing horse meat turned up in Russia for the first time.
A growing number of European stores and companies, including Findus and Nestle, have recalled beef ready meals, after test results found they contained horse DNA.
The European Union had earlier told member states to conduct random tests for horsemeat.
Irish food inspectors announced in mid-January that they had found horsemeat in frozen beefburgers made by firms in the Irish Republic and the UK, and sold by a number of UK supermarket chains, including Tesco, Iceland, Aldi and Lidl.
The Russian federal service said the sausages had been purchased from an Austrian company.
