Relatives of prisoners wait to hear news of survivors at the Agricultural Penitentiary of Monte Cristo in Boa Vista, Roraima state [Xinhua]
In what appears to be a continuation of the ongoing gang war over territory and control of drug routes, Brazilian media reported that several of the dead at the Monte Cristo Penitentiary in Boa Vista, Roraima had been decapitated, quartered, disemboweled and burned at the stake.
The riot, which was blamed on the Sao Paulo-based First Capital Command (PCC) drug gang, ended when elite Brazilian security forces stormed the prison. Brazilian media speculated that the violence was in revenge for another deadly jail riot earlier in the week.
Less than a week ago, several bodies were beheaded, dismembered, and thrown over the fence of the prison in the city of Manaus. Most of those dead belonged to the PCC and were killed by a rival gang – the North Family drug faction.
The riot in Manaus on Sunday was also triggered when an alliance between PCC and the Red Command, another powerful drug gang, fell to ruin.
