This is the first time the UNSC sends observers to assist in the long awaited peace deal in Colombia [Xinhua]

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday unanimously approved the deployment of 450 observers to assist in the implementation of the latest peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC rebels.

The agreement outlines a ceasefire between the government and the rebels, bringing an end to a conflict that has lasted nearly half a century.

“Stakes for the success of the Mission is high,” Michele J. Sison, United States deputy representative to the UN, said.

Sison added that the participation of the United Nations in the monitoring and verification mechanism of the Agreement on the ceasefire was key.

Back in January, the UNSC decided to establish a 12-month political mission to “monitor and verify the definitive bilateral ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, and the laying down of arms.”
