Russian President Vladimir Putin med with Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hangzhou, China Sunday.

During the meeting, the two discussed the conflict in Syria as well as the current oil glut.

Bin Salman said cooperation between both their countries, the two largest oil producers in the world, would ultimately benefit energy markets.

Putin agreed.

Russian presidency spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters after the meeting that the two leaders also discussed “finance and high-tech as well as the WTO [World Trade Organization]”.

The meeting came mere days after Putin called on Saudi Arabia and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to reach consensus with major oil producers to cap production in a bid to boost global energy prices.

During his interview with Bloomberg News, Putin had the Saudi royal “is a very reliable partner with whom you can reach agreements, and can be certain that those agreements will be honored.”

Both West Texas Intermediate and Brent Crude closed about three per cent up on Friday following Putin’s remarks about the oil industry.
