The Security Council has demanded that North Korea end its belligerent missile tests [Xinhua]
“The members of the Security Council deplore all Democratic People’s Republic of Korea ballistic missile activities,” the statement read.
The Council also expressed “serious concern” that Pyongyang continued to conduct these missile launches throughout the year “in flagrant disregard of the repeated statements of the Security Council.”
China, perhaps North Korea’s only friendly neighbor, joined the UNSC in voicing discontent, having previously blocked similar statements condemning Pyongyang.
The foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea on Wednesday jointly condemned North Korea’s latest missile launch and urged Pyongyang to stop its provocative acts and to adhere to United Nations resolutions.
According to South Korea’s Yonhap Agency, North Korea fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) at around 5:30 am that flew about 500 kilometers and fell into Japanese waters.
Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida earlier in the week said the missile launch “simply cannot be tolerated,” while Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters on Wednesday that this provocation is “difficult to forgive.”
