Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday strongly condemned the Islamic State (IS) for the death of a Chinese hostage, stressing that China opposes any form of terrorism.

“China firmly opposes all kinds of terrorist ideology and will resolutely fight any criminal terrorist activity that challenges the baseline of humanity,” said Xi.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders’ Meeting in Manila.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday confirmed the death of a Chinese hostage Fan Jinghui who had been held by the Islamic State.

“The Chinese government strongly condemns this brutal, inhumane act, and will bring the criminals before the law,” Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in Beijing.

The Chinese victim was a freelance consultant, local media reported.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has vowed justice after Fan’s killing and reaffirmed China’s commitment to fighting global terrorism. No details are yet known about where the terrorist group killed Fan.

The Foreign Ministry has said the Chinese government made “all-out efforts to rescue” Fan after learning about his kidnapping.

In the latest edition of its English language magazine, Dabiq, Islamic State said it had killed a Norwegian and a Chinese captive, with probable pictures of the dead men under a banner reading “Executed”.

The latest issue of its magazine also carried a photo of what it said was the improvised bomb that brought down a Russian airliner over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula last month.
