Opinion polls ahead of the elections show Aam Aadmi (Common Man), an anti-corruption party, is on course to win between 36 and 41 of the 70 seats in the Delhi assembly.
Arvind Kejriwal, a former tax inspector leads the new populist political party dedicated to improving the lot of the “common man”. Kejriwal is the chief ministerial candidate of the party for the city of 15 million people.
The party’s message and symbol – a broom –to sweep away endemic graft and clean up Indian politics, proved popular with urban voters. The new political outfit held power in the capital for a brief period last year but resigned from government after 49 days.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing a tough challenge from the newest entrant in Indian politics. Delhi elections could end Modi’s winning streak since taking charge last year.
According to three opinion polls published this week the BJP is on course to win between 27 and 32 seats.
Election results of the Indian national capital will be announced on 10th February.
