An accident in a coal mine in China’s Xinjiang region has killed sixteen people and injured 11 others, local authorities said Saturday.

The coal mine collapsed in Tiechanggou township in the regional capital Urumqi late Friday night when 33 workers were working underground, according to Xinjiang Administration of Coal Mine Safety.

Six of them managed to escape while the injured workers have been hospitalized.

The cause of the accident is being investigated, said the safety watchdog.

China has the world’s deadliest mines although in recent years regulators have strengthened the enforcement of safety rules.

China leads the world in coal-mining fatalities. The Chinese government said 1,049 people were killed or missing in coal-mining accidents last year.

China is the world’s top coal producer and consumer.
