Ahead of the runoff on October 26, the two Brazilian presidential candidates remain technically tied, says a new poll released Wednesday.
A Datafolha poll said challenger Aecio Neves has registered 45 per cent of voter support, while President Dilma Rousseff, who is running for reelection, has 43 per cent. As the poll has a two-point margin of error, the candidates are technically tied.
Some 12 per cent of those surveyed said they are undecided or will vote blank.
In last week’s Datafolha poll, Neves and Rousseff had 46 and 44 per cent of support respectively.
The latest poll also registered the rejection rate of the two candidates, with 42 per cent of the people saying they would not vote for Rousseff under any circumstances, while 38 per cent said the same about Neves.
The poll, carried out on Oct. 14-15, surveyed 9,081 voters in 366 towns across Brazil.
Rousseff won the first round of voting on Oct. 5 with 41.6 per cent of the votes, while Neves garnered 33.6 per cent.
“An election campaign is a defining moment for all of us to reflect on the future of Brazil. We led a process of the most profound social inclusion of the last decades in Brazil,” asserted Rousseff during her campaign trail on Wednesday.
All polls prior to the first round predicted that Brazilian Socialist Party’s candidate Marina Silva would be the runner up, with the numbers showing Neves trailed in the distant third place.
Silva has now announced she will endorse opposition candidate Aecio Neves for the Oct. 26 runoff.
