Wu said China is deeply concerned about the escalating conflict between the two sides. The Palestinian death toll crossed 160 on Sunday with no fatalities reported on the Israeli side.
“A tit-for-tat response can only worsen the situation, and create more antagonism and hatred. That does not help anyone, and will make the goal of peace unattainable. Under the circumstances, we urge both Palestine and Israel to restrain themselves and avoid an escalation of tensions. A ceasefire needs to be sought out as soon as possible, and any pressing issues can be visited through negotiation. That is an outcome that China and the international community are looking forward to seeing,” he said.
On Friday, the United Nations said 77 per cent of those killed in the Israeli raids were civilians, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Earlier on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the need to stop the armed confrontation in the Gaza Strip, in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“A detailed discussion took place on the sharp escalation of the situation in the Gaza Strip and the south of Israel. The Russian side stressed the need for a speedy end to the armed confrontation, which has led to numerous casualties among the civilian population,” said a Kremlin statement.
