A huge blast took place at 06:00 a.m. at a gas pipeline of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s gas connection station in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, said officials.
The cause of the incident is being investigated, said officials. ONGC has shut down the gas field following the accident.
“As per initial reports we have received, 14 deaths have been reported and some more are critically injured and undergoing treatment,” Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu was quoted by local media.
Local officials said 13 bodies were recovered from the accident site while another death was reported from the local hospital where the injured are being treated.
“As of now the fire has been brought under control. Fire engines were rushed to the spot and rescue operations are underway,” East Godavari District Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad was quoted by Press Trust of India.
“(I’ve) ordered an inquiry and action plan to avoid these in future. My condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in East Godavari blast,” tweeted state Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
