Beijing has asked Tokyo to “respect the lawful rights of China’s and Russia’s navies … and stop all reconnaissance and interference activities. Otherwise Japan will bear any and all consequences from this”.
Both China and Japan lay contesting claims to a group of islands in the East China Sea where the joint Sino-Russian naval drills took place this week.
“Japanese military planes intruded on the exercise’s airspace without permission and carried out dangerous actions, in a serious violation of international laws and standards, which could have easily caused a misunderstanding and even led to a mid-air accident,” the Chinese Defence Ministry said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Chinese and Russian navies on Saturday concluded combat drill on the East China Sea.
A total of 14 warships, two submarines, nine airplanes and six helicopters from both sides took part in the three-day drill, “Joint Sea-2014”.
Wang Chao, head of a coordination team from the Chinese Navy was quoted by Chinese official media as saying that cooperation between two navies have improved with every joint drill in the past three years.
This drill is more complex than previous ones but the two sides can do better in the future, said Wang, who has participated in all three joint drills.
On Monday, commanders of the two navies will hold discussions on the drill, while China’s Zhengzhou missile destroyer and Russia’s Varyag missile cruiser will be open to visitors in Shanghai.
