“Development of the Black Sea Fleet is part of a federal targeted program on the establishment of the Black Sea Fleet basing structure on Russian territory in 2005-2020. The total funding of the program is 86.7 billion rubles,” Shoigu said during a conference call.
“New submarines will join the Black Sea fleet, as well as new-generation surface ships, this year. All this requires much attention from us,” said Shoigu.
The Russian Defense Minister noted that some 48 infrastructure facilities have been put into service to date in the port of Novorossiysk and in home stations of the Black Sea Fleet coastal forces in the town of Temryuk and the settlement of Utash.
Shoigu stressed the need to make adjustments to the current development program due to the recent reunification of Crimea with Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier instructed senior officials to work out a development plan for the country’s Black Sea Fleet by June.
Putin had asserted that the Mediterranean Sea is deemed as a “strategically important region, where we have interests connected with ensuring Russia’s national security.”
“For this reason we are talking about a creation of conditions for permanent presence of Russian ships in the Mediterranean in our days,” Putin said last year.
