India-Sri Lanka eye nuclear agreement
May 6, 2014, 8:10 am

Top officials from India and Sri Lanka met in Colombo on Tuesday to negotiate a comprehensive civil nuclear cooperation agreement.

This was the second round of talks between the two neighbours on a draft agreement.

The two-days talks were held between Foreign Ministry officials, representatives of Atomic Energy bodies and other energy experts from both sides.

Colombo is keen to generate cheap electricity to draw large investments and boost its post-war economy.

“Discussions were held in a warm, friendly and cordial manner on the draft text of a comprehensive agreement on bilateral civil nuclear cooperation,” the Indian High Commission in Colombo said in a statement.

The two sides are scheduled to meet again in India in the second half of 2014 to continue talks on the draft agreement.

India’s decision to abstain from voting on the US-backed resolution in Geneva earlier this year was hailed by the Colombo administration.

Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister G.L Peiris said “the decision taken by India was significant”.
