North Korea’s KCNA news agency had on Monday called Park an “eccentric old maid” after she proposed UN-sponsored humanitarian aid to alleviate child hunger, provide medical help to pregnant women and reinvigorate cultural exchange between the former warring countries on the peninsula.
During her speech, which she gave during a state visit in Dresden, Germany, Park also Park urged Pyongyang to regularly hold cross-border family reunions.
In February, families separated by the demilitarized zone demarcating North and South Korea were reunited after a three-year hiatus sparked by tensions between the two governments.
The war of words between Pyongyang and Seoul also comes a day after their respective militaries exchanged hundreds of shells fired across the border near the disputed sea boundary along the Yellow Sea.
North Korea had initially given notice to its southern neighbour that it would hold live fire artillery drills; however, when the shells fell into South Korean waters, Seoul ordered its forces to fire back.
According to the Associated Press quoting a senior military official, no shells from either side hit land or installations.
On Sunday, North Korea said it would soon conduct a “new” kind of nuclear missile test.
