China on Saturday announced humanitarian aid worth $3.3 million to Syria even as the fighting continues between the regime and rebels in the war-torn nation.

The Chinese embassy in Damascus confirmed the arrival of the first batch of the aid.

The Chinese relief of blankets and quilts are to aid the internally displaced Syrian facing a particularly harsh winter, said Zhang Xun, China’s ambassador to Syria.

Hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees straddled between their country and Lebanon are at serious risk as freezing weather batters the Middle East region, the UN and relief agencies have warned.

A Chinese cargo plane arrived in the Damascus International Airport Friday with the first batch of goods, while the second shipment is due to arrive early Sunday.

The Syrian Arab Red Crescent will organize and oversee the distribution of the aid.

According to the refugee body of the UN, the number of Syrian refugees who fled to neighboring countries exceeded 2.3 million while 4.25 million are internally dislocated.
