Police sources say that shortly after midnight an explosion brought down part of the five story police station in the city of Mansoura in the Daqahliya province in the Nile Delta.
Most of the fatalities were police personnel, the Ministry of Interior said.
Egyptian state media said that efforts were ongoing to free people believe to be trapped under the rubble after the explosion. Local networks also showed a number of people being treated for injuries at nearby hospitals.
There has been an increase in violence in Egypt since the July 3rd overthrow of the democratically elected Islamist government.
A number of attacks have targeted police stations and military checkpoints, but these were previously focused in the Sinai Peninsula.
Interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi condemned the attack and said such violence was designed to derail Egypt’s referendum on a new draft constitution on January 14.
