Rousseff said she has signed the decree affecting the change at the end of a year of tepid growth.
“Signed decree that resets the Minimum Wage to $ 724.00 USD from January 2014 _ increase of 6.78% over the current value,” tweeted Rousseff late on Monday night.
The Brazilian minimum wage is adjusted depending on inflation and economic growth.
A weekly central bank poll on Monday raised their forecast for Brazil’s inflation in 2014.
Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega said last week that the Brazilian economy will pick up steam next year provided no adverse international conditions persisted.
“To arrive at growth of 4% we’ll need to have a recovery of the international economy,” he said. “I don’t know if it will be 4%, but it will be more than this year.”
Brazilian President Rousseff’s gaining back of lost popularity has been buoyed partly by low unemployment and the social welfare programs of her government aimed at benefitting the poorest of Brazilians.
Earlier this month, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff’s government has scored a record high approval rating of 75 per cent.
The survey conducted by polling firm Ibope said a majority of the respondents of the poll said “elimination of hunger and poverty” was a major achievement of the Rousseff administration while she still scored poorly in the area of “health improvement”.
