The attack, which mimics a similar bombing in Baghdad six weeks ago, also wounded 42 people and came a day after Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq Gyorgy Busztin condemned the renewed violence that has gripped the country in the past six months.
A day earlier, a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt blew himself up at the Al Temimi mosque (predominantly Shia) in the Kasra area in northern Baghdad killing at least 30 people and injuring 55 others who had just completed evening prayers.
“This heinous act of violence which shocked the country, shall not undermine the belief in peaceful coexistence among the Iraqi people,” Busztin said in a statement.
Meanwhile, also on Friday, a roadside bomb killed two soldiers and wounded two others in the northern city of Mosul.
Khalaf Hameed, a local municipal official in Mosul’s northern Shora district, was assassinated in related violence.
Al-Qaeda in Iraq and the Levant, an umbrella group for extremist militias in Iraq and Syria, has claimed responsibility for many of the attacks in the past few months.
On Friday, the group admitted failing to assassinate a prominent Sunni leader who was recently appointed the head of the sahwa, a Sunni paramilitary force that has been battling Al-Qaeda since 2007.
