China aims to boost public-sector and household spending on the IT industry by more than 20 percent annually through 2015 [Xinhua]
China will strive to complete broadband coverage of both urban and rural areas by 2020, the State Council, China’s equivalent to a cabinet, announced Saturday.
China has now officially identified broadband development as a national strategy.
“More efforts are needed to boost domestic information-sector consumption and make the industry a new driver of economic growth,” the State Council.
The aim is to provide fixed broadband coverage to 50 per cent of China’s households by 2015.
WiFi coverage is slated to cover all key public urban areas by 2013.
Zhu Hongren, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s chief engineer and spokesman, said last month that China hopes to make the IT sector the nation’s third-largest industry, after real estate and vehicles.

Fiber optic networks and 3G mobile coverage will be facilitated in 2013 while broadband coverage will be expanded from 2014 to 2015.
The world’s biggest mobile carrier, China Mobile hopes to start a commercial rollout of 4G service as soon as possible.
Apple Inc and China Mobile Ltd are on the verge of announcing a deal that could see the new iPhone operate on China Mobile’s network.
China is widely expected to grant 4G licenses by the end of 2013.
