“Those of us involved in advancing the AIDS response are deeply grateful for you personal leadership in making AIDS a priority in South Africa and across the African continent,” Theron said during the meet.
President Zuma had lanched a plan to increase life expectancy of South Africans by continuing to roll out anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) to people afflicted with HIV and AIDS.
South Africa has the world’s largest number of people living with HIV and AIDS (5.6 million).
Theron is South African born and a UN Peace Representative.
The president said South Africa is “inspired by the involvement of personalities like Ms Theron” in AIDS awareness and mitigation campaigns.
“As government we are pleased by Ms Theron’s dedication and commitment in the struggle against this lethal disease and we are ready to work with her organisation to ensure that our people, particularly young people live healthy and HIV/AIDS free lives,” said Zuma.
