“China’s economic power is on the rise, and many think it will eventually supplant the United States as the world’s dominant superpower,” says the Pew Research report.
“Publics around the world believe the global balance of power is shifting,” it adds.
Seventy per cent of respondents across the nations surveyed felt the US government respects the personal freedoms of its people while only 36 per cent said this about China.
The poll was carried out before the Edward Snowden revelations about the US intelligence agency spying on its citizens disclosures.
In Europe, the US gets mostly positive ratings.
The poll also shows that two-thirds of the Chinese believe their country either already has or someday will topple the US to claim the top spot as the world’s most powerful economy.
Forty-four per cent of Americans named China as the world’s most powerful economy.
The IMF has in its latest report kept its annual growth forecast for China at 7.75 per cent for 2013 which is higher than the Chinese government’s target of 7.5 per cent this year.
Fifty-six per cent of Chinese believe their country should be more respected around the world than it currently is.
38,000 people were polled in 39 countries between March and May this year.
