12.66 million jobs were created in urban China in 2012 [Xinhua]

China’s urban unemployment rate stood at 4.1 per cent last year, unchanged from a year earlier, said the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security on Monday.

Some 767.04 million people were employed in China’s urban areas in 2012, an increase of 2.84 million on the previous year, according to the ministry.

In urban China, 12.66 million jobs were created last year.

China aims to keep the registered urban unemployment rate within five percent in the 2011-2015 period, according to a statement released by the State Council in 2011.

The official figures, however, do not register categories like fresh graduates.

Premier Li Keqiang said earlier this month that China faces an unprecedented challenge in employing a record number of university graduates.

“In the first few months of the year, as economic growth has slowed the employment trend has remained stable but employment pressures remain and the problem of employment for tertiary students is particularly prominent,” Li said.
