Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his personal contribution in the partnership between the two countries during their meeting on the sidelines of the Fifth BRICS Summit in Durban Wednesday.

“When you came to India in December,” Singh said, “we had a good opportunity to discuss many aspects of relations between our two countries. I am very satisfied with the results of those talks.”

“At present, India and Russia are actively cooperating in the sphere of security, in atomic energy and in many other spheres,” Singh continued.

“The mechanism of annual summits allows to have very detail discussions of all aspects of cooperation between our two countries and global political problems.”

Singh also assured Putin about the progress of the atomic power reactor Kudankulam plant.

“I am pleased to inform you that Kudankulam I will become operational and critical by next month. As for Units III and IV we have secured all internal approvals and we hope to operationalise our cooperation on Unit III and IV,” Singh told Putin.

Singh was accompanied by Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon, among others during the meeting.

On bilateral economic cooperation, Singh said the two countries cannot be satisfied with the status quo and should push to boost such ties.

On his part, Putin thanked the prime minister for the warm welcome he had received in December when he visited Delhi last year and hoped that Singh would visit Russia for the G20 summit.

“I have instructed national security adviser to keep in touch with the NSA of Russia and those who are responsible for the strategic programme,” Singh said.
