Authorities in the southern riviera city of Nice say at least 73 people were killed and more than 100 injured when a truck plowed into crowds of people gathered at the promenade to enjoy the fireworks commemorating Bastille Day.

Although the French interior ministry has said that the truck driver had been “neutralized” without providing detailed information, there has been no confirmation from authorities so far that this was a terrorist attack.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

French President Francois Hollande cut short his family trip to Avignon and headed back to Paris for crisis talks, his office said.

Witnesses told local media that the truck veered from left to right and zig-zagged at a speed of 30 to 40 kilometers.

An unconfirmed report from local media quoted witnesses who said that the driver got out of the truck and fired into the crowds before being shot and killed by police.

They said the promenade was littered with the bodies of those run over by the truck.

At press time, French media quoting the interior ministry said that police were searching for a possible accomplice.
