The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, will visit Russia to hold talks with President Vladimir Putin on the Middle East and energy on Jan. 17-19, local news agencies quoted the Kremlin as saying on Friday.

Talks at “the highest level” in Moscow will focus on “several issues on the bilateral agenda, as well as international problems with an emphasis on the situation in the Middle East” said a Tass report.

During a Qatar visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in August, talks between the two sides had focused on issues of peaceful settlement in Syria, Yemen and Libya as well as the Russian proposal of creating a collective security system for the region.

Qatar-Russia bilateral trade amounted to more than $501 million in 2014.

Russia and Saudi Arabia—the world’s two biggest oil producers—have indicated they weren’t pulling back from huge crude output levels that have helped send prices tumbling.

Qatar is also a significant oil producer.

Earlier in September, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a meeting with the Emir of Qatar had suggested a summit for heads of state of OPEC countries to defend oil prices, an idea he said the leader of the Arab Gulf state “liked”.

The Venezuelan leader also suggested to al-Thani that non-OPEC countries, which include Russia, take part.
