China has warned the US that any tampering with the current decades-old policy on the status of Taiwan as a bargaining chip for a future trade deal would be a waste of time and is akin to “lifting a rock and dropping it on their own feet”.

Just four days ahead of his inauguration, China has delivered a strong message to US President-elect Donald Trump that the One China policy is non-negotiable.

This comes following another interview given by Trump to local US media in which he hints at some kind of negotiation over the One China policy in his future dealings with Beijing.

This culminates more than a month of political war of words between the president-elect and Beijing over the status of Taiwan and future trade deals between the two powers.

On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said: “The One China principle is the precondition and political basis for any country having relations with China.”

“If anyone attempts to damage the One China principle or if they are under the illusion they can use this as a bargaining chip, they will be opposed by the Chinese government and people,” she added.

Chinese media has been charged in its editorials calling Trump a “rookie” and warning him that any attempt to hinder the success of the One China policy would be “playing with fire”.
