In the first such incident of the new year, Greek Coast Guard officials said they had rescued 217 seafaring refugees near the Island of Agathonisi.

Greek sources said that one child was killed when a small craft carrying 40 people crashed against the rocks.

Most of the refugees, were Syrian, the coast guard said.

Greek authorities said that the waters were very choppy in the east Aegean Sea and considered dangerous for the crafts desperate refugees use.

The UN says that at least 3,800 people have died trying to make the perilous journey from Libya or Turkey to Greek and Italian shores.

It is estimated that one million people crossed into Europe in 2015; Greece says that 850,000 reached its shores in the past year.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble last week criticized Athens for not doing enough to secure its maritime borders and for not forcing the refugees to apply asylum in the first country of the European Union they land on – chiefly, Greece.

Other German officials said Greece’s alleged lax regulations raise security threats. They want all refugees screened.
