The death toll due to flash floods in the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir reached 120 on Saturday with nearly 10000 people stranded.

Coupled with heavy landslides, many houses were washed away, said Indian TV reports. Torrential downpours have lashed the state, including the capital city of Srinagar for the past few days. The Indian Meteorological Department has said the south-west monsoon is expected to continue in the state for the next couple of days.

Multiple disaster response teams have reached areas across the state, with a population of 10.1 million to conduct relief operations, as rivers and canals continued to flow over the danger mark for the fourth straight day.

Schools across the state have been shut till Monday owing to the floods, the worst in 50 years according to the Indian government.

“This is the worst flood Jammu and Kashmir witnessed in last 50 years,” Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Saturday.
