Moscow has clarified that Russia will use only its Air Force in Syria against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on Assad's request.
"We have many things to do [and] there is opportunity to work on (resolving) joint problems together," Putin said.
"The ideologists of militants make a mockery of Islam and pervert its true humanistic values," Putin said.
This marks the first time France takes direct military action against the extremist Islamist group.
After months of trying to sideline Moscow, the US is trying to re-engage Russia in efforts to end the war in Syria.
A Kremlin spokesman said Syria will be the main focus of talks between Obama and Putin next week.
