Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s president-elect Petro Poroshenko held talks in Normandy on the sidelines of D-day landings commemoration in the north of France.

French President Hollande’s office told French news network BFMTV  Putin spoke with Poroshenko for 15 minutes about possible measures to de-escalate violence in Ukraine.

Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel also joined the first informal meeting between Moscow and Kiev top officials in the Chateau de Benouville, in Normandy, where world leaders had lunch together.

According to the report, Putin and Poroshenko ended the meeting with a handshake in a likely sign of Moscow’s recognition of Poroshenko’s legitimacy the day before he is sworn in.

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) on Thursday expressed support to the new leadership in Ukraine and planned to enhance cooperation in the field of energy, trade and climate change.

Speaking at a press conference after the summit, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said the G7 stands united behind Ukraine and its new leadership, politically and economically.

US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Valdimir Putin also met on Friday as world leaders commemorate the D-Day landings in Normandy, north France.

With no scheduled formal meeting, BFMTV reported Obama held talks with Putin after meetings with French president Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
