Chinese President Xi Jinping has said China is seriously concerned about the escalating conflict in Gaza and will continue its efforts to ease tensions between Palestine and Israel even as the Palestinian death toll on Monday morning reached 501.

“We are seriously concerned about and saddened by the conflict in Gaza, which have caused heavy casualty of civilians,” said Xi, adding that China had urged the two sides to seek an immediate ceasefire.

“We support the mediation efforts by the United Nations, regional countries and the Arab League,” said Xi, reaffirming that China has always supported the just cause of the Palestinian people.

Xi said Palestine and Israel must meet each other half way, so as to resume peace negotiations at an early date.

Meanwhile, China’s special envoy on Middle East Affairs Wu Sike on Sunday called on Israel to immediately stop the military operations against the Gaza Strip and put an end to the blockage it imposes on the coastal enclave.

“We condemn the killing and the targeting of innocent civilians and we urge Israel and all parties involved to immediately cease fire,” he told reporters.

Wu is on a Middle East trip including visits to besieged Palestine, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Qatar.

“China is exerting its utmost efforts at the regional and international levels to reach a ceasefire and stop the suffering of the civilians,” he said.

The Chinese official also called on the Palestinian Authority to urge Hamas to stop firing rockets at Israel. 13 Israeli soldiers have been killed in heavy fighting on Sunday.

Wu said China is coordinating with the Palestinian leadership to send humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to reduce their suffering amidst the Israeli offensive.
