New Zealand currently holds the UNSC’s rotating presidency; its Prime Minister John Key is expected to chair the meeting.
The announcement comes amid the international community’s continued stalled efforts to end the five-year Syrian civil war which has killed at least 250,000 people and displaced millions.
A few hours earlier, UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura – who has presided over numerous peace negotiations – said he would put together a new political initiative which would likely frame the September 21 UNSC meeting.
De Mistura, who suspended direct talks between the Syrian government and the armed opposition groups, said he would circulate his initiative several days ahead of the meeting in order “to help the General Assembly look the Syria problem straight in the eye.”
Last week, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that he and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov were close to ironing out yet another peace initiative.
Kerry said that the only way forward for the Syrian people was to negotiate a political resolution to the conflict.
For his part, Lavrov hailed the talks with his American counterpart saying that the two sides have now minimized the differences between them and narrowed their vision for a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis.
