Even as Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott spoke to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin about plans to deploy an armed multinational force to Ukraine, EU ambassador to Russia Vygaudas Ušackas has said Moscow needs to “constructively support” the probe process of the MH17 crash

“We hope for Russia’s constructive support – both on the access to the crash site and unbiased and full study of all the circumstances,” he told Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

“At the moment, it is most important in this context to positively assess that the fact that the Russian side has supported the UN Resolution on July 21 is a step in the right direction,” Ušackas said.

On July 17 , nearly 300 people were killed when a Malaysia Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian rebels are battling government forces.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed that the crash site should be secured by international police so the search could go ahead.

“The two leaders noted the need for an immediate end to hostilities, including so as to guarantee international experts’ access to the crash site,” said a Kremlin statement after Putin spoke to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

A multinational force that has been proposed to further secure the MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine will now include some 100 armed Australian police personnel.

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin on Friday said Moscow has lauded the UN efforts for ensuring safety of international experts at the crash site of Malayasia Airlines Boeing 777.

“We favour a direct dialogue between the Ukrainian authorities and the southeast,” Karasin said.
