“We categorically disagree with the approach of the Americans, who are following the path of derailing real international investigations of previous cases, and prefer to stick labels groundlessly,” Peskov told the press.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson blamed Russia for “shielding” Syrian President Bashar Al Assad from accountability regarding alleged chemical weapons attacks in eastern Ghouta, near the capital Damascus.
“Whoever conducted the attacks, Russia ultimately bears responsibility for the victims in East Ghouta and countless other Syrians targeted with chemical weapons, since Russia became involved in Syria,” Tillerson told reporters during a press conference in Paris.
Peskov suggested that it is difficult to work with the Americans under such circumstances. Nevertheless, Russia has called for a new probe into the chemical weapons attacks, mandated by the United Nations Security Council.
Tillerson’s remarks and Russia’s response come just a day ahead of scheduled Syria peace talks in Vienna, Austria.
