He offered condolences on behalf of the Russian people in a call to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and called the attack “atrocious”.
A bomb went off in the ladies section of the Church in Cairo’s Abbassyia district early Sunday morning, security sources said. They added that many of the dead were women and children.
“It is especially tragic that the victims included women and children,“ Putin said in his message of condolences.
In a statement to the Egyptian people, El-Sisi said: “Terrorism targets the country’s and Copts and Muslims. Egypt will only be made stronger and more united in such circumstances.”
He vowed to pursue the people behind the attack and hold them accountable.
A day earlier, six policemen were killed in a terrorist attack near the pyramids in Giza.
Putin said that such horrific attacks stress the need for joint efforts to fight international terrorism; he pledged that Russia is ready to continue close cooperation with Egypt to counter this threat.
