Apple iPhone sales are up 400 per cent year-on-year in India, says the company’s CEO Tim Cook.

“From an iPhone point of view…we saw very strong sales in several of the emerging markets, sort of pre-pay markets. India was up over 400 per cent,” said Cook.

India is the world’s third largest smartphone market.

In encouraging news for the company which has seen sales dip in China, India and other emerging markets have brought cheer, said Cook in a recent teleconference with analysts.

Apple joined forces with Ingram Micro and Redington India for distribution in the Indian market and also undertook a “marketing blitzkrieg” which analysts say has paid off.

Sales of iPads in India have also seen double-digit growth, Cook noted.

Cook said previously that distribution in India “was too high and complex.”
