The Sichuan provincial government has put the death toll at 58 for last week’s floods.

One-hundred and seventy-five others were missing in rainstorm-triggered floods in southwest China’s Sichuan Province, authorities said on Tuesday.

Thunderstorms and rainstorms have wreaked havoc in Sichuan over the past week.

Rainfall is expected to further increase and reach this year’s peak on Wednesday and Thursday, with precipitation of more than 300 mm, according to the provincial meteorological administration.

Houses and bridges have been swept away by heavy floods in what has been described as the worst flooding in decades.

An aviation unit of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had on Tuesday dispatched three helicopters with 7.5 tonnes of relief material in 12 flights to one of the worst affected Wenchuan County.
