China sets theme for BRICS 9th Summit
February 10, 2017, 10:05 am

The BRICS 9th Summit, which is scheduled to be held in the resort city of Xiamen in east China’s Fujian Province in September, will focus on strengthening global governance, Chinese media reported today.

According to the Xinhua news agency, the summit will be under the theme “BRICS: Stronger Partnership for a Brighter Future” and look to complete the initiatives started at the Goa Summit last year.

Key issues will be furthering study on finalizing plans to establish an independent ratings agency which will appeal more to developing nations looking for fair criteria and assessments.

The BRICS countries will also look at means to expand the power and strengthen the international financial architecture of the New Development Bank, which is expected to make $2.5 billion in loans this year.

With China chairing this year’s BRICS Summit it is likely that member states will discuss the importance of globalization and means to counter protectionist policies – such as US President Donald Trump withdrawing from international organizations and treaties.

China is likely to impress on fellow members the importance of the Paris Climate Control Accords as a means to combat global warming.

High on the agenda will be efforts to deal with international terrorism and third-party intervention in regional crises.

China raises relevant issues such as increasing and deepening cooperation between the member countries, making the BRICS platform a truly global and improving the strengthening it for enhancing South-South Cooperation. However, its statements do not follow its action. rather, it seems that Beijing is more interested to develop a parallel setup where China should have more say.
It has hardly taken note of combining the member countries resources to increase and boost overall growth prospects through combined efforts and cooperation.
China needs to take positive move to realize the goal set for 2017 Summit: Stronger cooperation for Brighter Future.
