The First Sherpa Meeting of the 9th BRICS Summit in Nanjing, east China’s Jiangsu Province, concluded on Friday [Xinhua]
During the first BRICS Sherpa meeting in Nanjing, capital of east China’s Jiangsu Province State Councilor Yang Jiechi outlined the four goals:
To have member states strengthen solidarity and collaboration, and improve global governance; To deepen pragmatic cooperation to achieve mutual benefit; To increase people-to-people exchanges, and enhance public support; and to strengthen institutional mechanism and improve cooperation platform.
He also said that BRICS members should exert maximum effort to maintain the openness of global economies and oppose trade protectionism in a bid to kickstart global growth which has been sluggish of late.
Yang’s statements come in tandem with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s consistent message to the world that BRICS will work toward enhancing multilateralism and globalization.
In a letter sent to BRICS leaders in January, Xi said: “In accordance with an open, inclusive and win-win BRICS spirit, China will work with other BRICS countries to make the Xiamen summit a success and move BRICS cooperation to a new level,” Xi said in the letter.
The BRICS Sherpa meeting, which concluded on Friday, focused on political, economic and cultural collaboration and was designed to prepare for the summit of leaders in September.
