On behalf of the Chinese government, they offered their “deepest condolences to the victims and their families”.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his.people’s sympathy and support to the victims’ families and friends and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Rescuers called off their search for survivors on Monday, but the Indian press on Tuesday reported that the authorities had suspended five officials as an investigation into the deadly derailment continued.

The cause of the derailment is still unknown but some believe it might have been the result of a faulty or fractured rail. Others said that the carriages themselves were very old and needed to be replaced.

This has been the worst railway disaster in 17 years.
