China’s GDP totaled more than $10 trillion in 2015 and the economy grew by around 7 per cent, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said on Saturday.

Li was speaking at the opening ceremony of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank in Beijing. He said the services sector accounted for half of the gross domestic product (GDP).

The premier also said that employment had expanded more than expected with 900 million people making up the country’s total workforce, including 150 million skilled professionals.

Consumption contributed nearly 60 per cent of growth. Chinese leaders have said the economy would go through “labour pains” as the economy transitions from relying on heavy industry and exports to one driven by consumption and services.

China’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2015 GDP figures are expected to be released on Jan. 19.

Chinese banks’ aggregate financing rose to 1.82 trillion yuan ($276 billion) in December, according to a report from the People’s Bank of China on Friday.
