China has successfully completed a missile interception test conducted from land, said the Chinese Ministry of Defense, as part of its efforts to build a missile shield to intercept incoming warheads.
The test, conducted within its territory late on Wednesday, “achieved the preset goal”, according to a statement posted on the website of the Ministry of National Defense.
“The test has reached the anticipated goal,” said the statement.
The test could build a shield for China’s air defence by intercepting incoming warheads such as ballistic missiles in space, state-run Xinhua agency said.
China’s military authorities provided no other information about the operation.
China has already successfully completed two mid-course land-based missile interception tests, in 2010 and 2013, both of which “attained preset objectives.”
Chinese military is preparing to conduct major defence exercises.
Chinese airlines have been directed to cut a quarter of their flights at a dozen Chinese airports as the Ministry of Defense gears up for four weeks of “high frequency exercises,” state media reported earlier.
Starting on July 15, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would be conducting three months of live-fire drills in six regional military commands. The anti-ballistic missile test was likely a part of these exercises.
