China successfully carried out a land-based mid-course missile interception test within its territory on Sunday.

China’s Defense Ministry had put out the news through its Information Bureau as reported by Chinese news agency Xinhua.

“The test has reached the preset goal,” an official with the bureau was quoted as saying.

“The test is defensive in nature and targets no other country,” he said.

Weapon system analysts believe such tests would boost the protective shield for China’s air defence.

These missiles would successfully intercept incoming warheads such as ballistic missiles in space.

This has been the second such missile test in China.

A similar anti-missile interception test was successfully conducted on 11 January, 2010.

Further details are awaited from military authorities of China.
