Brazilian President Michel Temer, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping and South African President Jacob Zuma held talks ahead of the G20 leaders summit.
Talks focused on enhancing the voice of developing countries at global forums like the G20.
“The G20 summit in Hangzhou will focus on development, especially that of developing countries, including African countries, which makes it different from other G20 summits,” Chinese diplomat La Yifan said.
On Sunday, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed new Brazilian President Michel Temer into the BRICS leaders group and congratulated Brazil on the successful Olympic Games.
“BRICS should promote a larger role for emerging economies & developing countries in global governance,” Xi told his counterparts.
Indian Prime Minister Modi echoed these sentiments during the BRICS meet where he said the bloc shares the responsibility of shaping the global agenda.
“We, as BRICS, are an influential voice in international discourse. It is, therefore, our shared responsibility to shape the international agenda,” Indian Prime Minister Modi said at the meet.
“Our shared responsibility is to shape international agenda in a manner that helps developing nations achieve their objectives,” Modi added.
India will host the 8th BRICS Summit next month in the southern state of Goa.
